The Planet Zoo 2 animal list is the page most players bookmark, because 136 species is a lot of names to keep straight. The game launched on October 13, 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with the largest roster in franchise history, spanning habitat mammals, aviary birds, exhibit creatures and a completely new fish line-up for the aquarium system. Below you will find every species we can verify against official sources, grouped the way the game groups them.
One caveat before the tables: Frontier never published the roster as a single official list, and the official Zoopedia is a lazy-loaded database that resists simple scraping. Everything documented here is sourced, dated and cross-checked, and where the record stops, we say so rather than pad the tables with guesses.
The Planet Zoo 2 Animal List at a Glance
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Species at launch | 136 (official Zoopedia count) |
| Species documented in the tables below | 84 (78 base game + 6 Deluxe) |
| Franchise debut named by the fact sheet | Shoebill |
| Fully flying birds | Yes, a franchise first |
| Fully aquatic species | Yes, a franchise first |
| Cetaceans (dolphins, whales, porpoises) | None at launch |
The gap between 136 and 84 is not an error. It is the honest boundary between what official pages and launch-week coverage name explicitly and what still lives only inside the game. If an animal you are looking for is missing from our tables, that is where to check next.

Data as of 2026-10-20. The complete in-game Zoopedia remains the authoritative source for the full 136-species roster.
How This List Was Verified
Every name above traces to one of three source layers. The backbone is a pre-launch fact sheet, published on October 13, 2026 and dated to an August 14, 2026 snapshot, which named 62 base-game species plus the six Deluxe animals using official reveals, the Zoopedia, Xbox Wire coverage and Steam announcements. On top of that sit the official Zoopedia entries visible on the game's website, which add the African Savannah Elephant, African Penguin and European Bison, and the official Final Zoopedia Reveals post of October 2, 2026, which confirmed twelve more species including the Greater Flamingo and Grizzly Bear that the August snapshot still listed as unconfirmed.
That evolution is worth remembering when you compare lists across the web. Species move from speculation to confirmation as Frontier names them, and several animals mocked in trailers for months only received Zoopedia entries in the final weeks. Our rule is the same one the fact sheet used: if it is not officially named, it does not go in the table.
Aquatic Animals: Hero Fish, Schooling Fish and Exhibit Tanks
The 20 documented fish species split into two behaviours that matter when you stock a tank. Hero fish are the large, solitary statement species such as the sand tiger shark, built for a big open ocean tank where one animal carries the view. Schooling species such as Pacific sardines, Indo-Pacific sergeants and yellow tangs move as groups, and launch coverage notes that many schooling fish can live in exhibit boxes as well as full aquarium halls, so a compact gallery wing is a viable way to show them off.
The same coverage highlights a detail aquarium builders will love: species occupy different water levels, with some cruising the surface, some the middle and some the bottom, so a thoughtfully stocked tank uses all three layers. Aquariums themselves track salinity, temperature and depth, and the hawksbill turtle is the reptile most at home in this new water layer.
Birds, Aviaries and Walkthrough Species
Fully flying birds are the other franchise first, and the documented bird list mixes returning favourites with genuine surprises. The shoebill is the fact sheet's only named franchise debut, the African penguin returns after its Planet Zoo 1 Africa Pack appearance, and the Eurasian bittern arrived as a launch-week talking point because real zoos so rarely keep this heron. Aviaries give these species vertical space to fly, perch and display, and cohabitation research unlocks which species thrive together.
Walkthrough design varies by species too. Some small birds tolerate guests walking through their aviary, while larger or more territorial species must stay behind glass, so check each Zoopedia entry before you route a path through your bird house.
Wildlife Reserve Releases
Wildlife Reserves across six locations accept a subset of the roster, and the tables above flag several documented examples. The golden eagle's enormous global range makes it releasable to many reserves, the white-tailed sea-eagle qualifies for all three European locations, and fish such as the clown loach can return to the Sumatra reserve. Coverage also references a Polish reserve and the Tanzania and Great Rift Valley reserve among the six. The official FAQ is explicit that not every species qualifies: only animals with an appropriate reserve habitat can be released, so treat releases as a planning decision rather than an afterthought. Our franchise mode guide explains how releases and breeding feed the conservation credit economy.
Species You Will Not Find (Yet)
A few animals circulate in community discussions but do not belong in a verified table. The August fact sheet flagged trailer-spotted species including the Eurasian beaver and blue tang as unconfirmed, and while the Grizzly Bear and Greater Flamingo later graduated to official confirmation, the rest remain unnamed by Frontier. Cetaceans are absent by design for now. If a species you care about is missing, the animals hub tracks how the roster is organised, and the Zoopedia guide shows what each in-game entry can tell you once you own the game.
